April 10, 1988 - Easter Night

Dear Diary,

Tonight was Easter. Everyone was so happy, saying “Christ is Risen!” and lighting candles and hugging. The church smelled like melting wax, flowers, and smoke. It was really pretty.

At midnight, the big bells went BONG BONG BONG I felt them thump in my tummy! Then fireworks POP POP in the sky, red, gold, green! Like lots of sparkles! Everyone looked up and smiled. I did too. But only a little.

I tried to be happy because I love Jesus. I really do. He’s kind and gentle, and He came back after dying, and that’s the biggest miracle ever!

But inside, I felt all weird and super quiet...

I held my candle and watched the flame dance, and I thought about my Alex. I miss him all the time. He was so tiny. He always ran to me when he was scared... He would’ve loved the fireworks. I hope he can see them from heaven.

And I thought about Ettie... I kept looking at the church doors, even though I knew she wouldn't walk in. But I still looked. I kept thinking… maybe if I pray hard enough... maybe she’ll come back too. Like Jesus did.

I should have never left that camp. I didn't know she had followed me into the forest. If I hadn’t run away, Ettie would still be here with me...

Me and Ettie picked the names Jane and Ettie 'cause our real names, Janene and Janette, sounded almost the same, and everybody kept getting us mixed up. We found it kinda funny. It was our special thing, just for us, like our own way of being different... even if others started using the names too later on... but now that she is gone, I don’t want to be called Jane anymore... I think I just want to be Janene again... My real name.

I whispered to Jesus, “Thank You for coming back. I love You so much.” Then I asked, “Please find Ettie or at least hug her for me, wherever she is.” I hope that’s okay.

I didn’t cry. I almost did, but I kept it inside, like a little raincloud. I think I’ll try to sleep now. My candle’s almost gone.

"Pick Your Supplies"

Imagine dedicating your entire life to art, creating colorful masterpieces for over half a century, refusing to retire because of your love for the craft, only to reach your mid-80s and watch people feed your beloved work into a machine that spits out soulless imitations in seconds.

The situation with OpenAI’s image generation, particularly in Studio Ghibli’s style, has spiraled out of control. Celebrities, politicians, and countless others have jumped on the trend, flooding the internet with AI slop.

In response, many artists have chosen to honor Studio Ghibli’s legacy the right way, by studying and understanding its artistry rather than relying on automation.

I joined this movement by drawing myself in Ghibli’s style, using Howl’s Moving Castle characters as reference for my tribute. I made sure to adapt my facial features to fit the art style naturally, avoiding the generic look of most AI-generated results. And yes, I even did the Eminem meme pose. 🤣

Mimicking another artist’s character style has always come naturally to me, but the background turned out to be incredibly challenging. Since this was my first time working in the Ghibli aesthetic, I did extensive research to capture its essence properly.

I’m incredibly proud of the results. Usually, I paint clouds with a mix of colors and brushes, then blur the entire background to create a depth-of-field illusion and get away with not adding too many details. But that’s not how Hayao Miyazaki and his team do it. Their backgrounds are rich with tons of details, so I made sure to approach mine the same way. Every cloud, every blade of grass, every piece of moss on the stone, I placed each pixel exactly where I wanted. No need to generate something over and over, hoping for the right outcome by chance.

For the composition, I aimed for the vintage hand-painted film cel look.

Studying Studio Ghibli’s art style has been an honor. This experiment taught me so much, and I hope more people take the time to truly appreciate the beauty of hand-crafted art. ❤

Here's my little tribute to this beautiful story. I wanted to wait before posting anything AOT-related, since the finale is still fresh. I decided to make a spoiler-free fanart after all.

I've been avoiding reading the manga for years, just so that I could enjoy the anime while maintaining the element of surprise.
